Sai Ying Pun has a long history; Water Street is worth exploring.
Sai Ying Pun has a long history, yet it feels classic rather than old-fashioned. It is home to both buildings filled with nostalgic charm and a concentration of hipster cafés and Instagrammable spots. Beyond the well-known High Street, Centre Street, and First to Third Streets, there is another street worth knowing: Water Street.
It is said that a large open nullah once ran down the middle of Water Street, channeling rainwater from the hills into Victoria Harbour, hence the name "Water Street." With urban development, the nullah was covered over and once became a hub for vegetable stalls and mobile food hawkers. Today, Water Street has neither water nor vegetable vendors, yet the once-unremarkable pedestrian railings are now filled with lush greenery.
Years ago, a community center in the Sai Ying Pun district launched a "Pedestrian Railing Greening and Beautification Project." Initially, neighborhood volunteers hung potted plants, and the initiative later gained traction, successfully attracting participation from locals including office workers, elderly residents, and homemakers. Tending to the plants and watering them became a neighborhood habit. By carefully nurturing the seedlings and sharing gardening tips, they have added a touch of natural beauty and a greater sense of community warmth to the area.
