政府九大旅遊熱點項目「舊油麻地警署」

The "Old Yau Ma Tei Police Station," one of the government's nine major tourism hotspot projects

One of the Government's Top Nine Tourist Attractions, the "Old Yau Ma Tei Police Station," is the "go-to" filming location for many Hong Kong movies and television dramas, including "Infernal Affairs," "Life Without Principle," and "Election." For those of us who grew up watching Hong Kong films, it is a very familiar site. With its architectural style full of old colonial charm and authentic "Hong Kong flavor," it has become a popular spot for tourists to experience the nostalgia of Hong Kong.

Crime and police thrillers are one of the most iconic genres in Hong Kong cinema, featuring protagonists navigating hails of bullets, intense battles of wits and strength between opposing sides, and poignant portrayals of brotherhood. Crime films produced in different eras also serve as markers of social changes and culture throughout the decades.

Beyond the Old Yau Ma Tei Police Station, many classic crime films feature scenes shot in traditional cafes or "cha chaan tengs." For instance, in the film "PTU" directed by Johnnie To, the scene where the Police Tactical Unit members eat a midnight snack in the mezzanine of the "China Cafe"—with its nostalgic environment layered with an underlying sense of tension—left a deep impression on audiences.

Whether it is the decommissioned "Old Yau Ma Tei Police Station" or the long-closed "China Cafe," both have fortunately been preserved on film. They allow us to reminisce about their appearances through images and savor the Hong Kong of the past. Thanks to Hong Kong cinema, our collective memories have been commemorated.
