香港橫街窄巷街道藏著不同的歷史與情懷

The narrow alleys and side streets of Hong Kong hold diverse histories and sentiments.

In this small city of Hong Kong, the narrow streets and alleyways hide unique characteristics; the stories behind the street names alone speak volumes about our history and sentiment. When it comes to distinctive street names, which ones come to mind for you?

Tracing back to the 1920s, "Sai Yee Street" (Laundry Street) lived up to its name, as it was indeed a stream used for laundry. The diligence of Hong Kong people transcends generations; at that time, local women would go door-to-door to collect clothes, bringing them to the stream to wash for a living and to help support their families.

By the 1930s, with urban development and the construction of sewage systems, the stream was cut off and converted into a road. The little stream transformed into a puzzle piece of a bustling city street, and the image of women sweating over their laundry became history. After the redevelopment, the street was officially named "Sai Yee Street," preserving the memories of people's lives through its name.
