尖沙咀鐘樓

"Meet me at the Clock Tower"—the classic go-to spot where Hongkongers always keep their appointments.

The 44-meter-tall Clock Tower was completed in 1915, primarily constructed of granite and red brick in an iconic Edwardian Classical Revival architectural style. Everyone knows the Clock Tower; it was once a classic meeting spot for many Hongkongers. Amidst the bustling crowds, the simple phrase "meet at the Clock Tower" was a promise to wait until the other person arrived.

The Clock Tower was originally part of the Kowloon-Canton Railway's Kowloon Terminus. In the old days, rickshaw pullers would solicit business beneath it, and the ticking of the clock’s hands, turning round and round, witnessed generations of hardworking Hongkongers forge their way through the years. In fact, the large bronze bell that rings the time has its own story; cast by a famous British bell foundry, it officially began keeping time for everyone in 1921. Over the years, it experienced periods of suspension, several relocations, and exhibitions. Finally, in 2010, on the 100th anniversary of railway services in Hong Kong, the bell was gifted by the KCR and MTR corporations to the Hong Kong government, and the Clock Tower was officially restored to its original state.

Nowadays, there are no more rickshaws beneath the Clock Tower; instead, you find bus stops, taxi stands, ice cream trucks, and the sound of hurried footsteps. Things have changed and people have moved on, but the memories remain deeply etched in our minds. When you pass by the Clock Tower, why not slow down your pace and savor your own unique memories of this landmark.
